What do Christianese words mean?

Christianese is the insider vocabulary of church: most of it is ordinary ideas (praying for someone, a daily Bible habit, God's undeserved kindness) wearing old or borrowed words. Below are 28 terms a man is likely to hear in his first months at church, each with a plain meaning and, where it comes from the Bible, the verse quoted from the World English Bible.

Quick answers men ask first

What is Christianese?

The informal name for the phrases Christians use among themselves, like “lift up” or “hedge of protection.” Some come from the Bible; others are church habits.

Is it rude to ask what a church word means?

No. Most people are glad to explain, and plenty of lifelong churchgoers are fuzzy on a few of these too.

Should I take communion if I'm visiting?

It depends on the church. Some invite anyone who follows Jesus, some ask that you are baptized, and Catholic and Orthodox churches generally ask visitors from other churches not to receive. Staying seated is always fine.

Why do some Bibles say “born anew” instead of “born again”?

The Greek word in John 3:3 can mean “again” or “from above.” The World English Bible chooses “born anew”; many other translations say “born again.” Both point to a new start that comes from God.

Does FORGED explain Bible words?

Yes. The free Bible Words glossary covers over 100 words, people, places and books. Days 2 to 90 of the plan need FORGED Premium.

A 6 a.m. men's breakfast, translated

Picture a guy at his first church men's breakfast: eggs, bad coffee, folding tables. The leader asks for prayer requests. One man says “unspoken.” Another asks the group to “lift up” his brother's job search. A third is driving to Ohio on Friday, so someone promises “traveling mercies” and “a hedge of protection.”

He nods along, then looks it all up in his truck. In plain English: please pray but don't ask, please pray for my brother's job hunt, please pray I get there safely, and please pray God keeps him from harm. Nothing in that room was secret; it just sounded like it.

Same thing, different church: a comparison strip

Different names for the same practice sometimes carry a real difference in belief. The short, fair version:

The bread and cup

Communion or Lord's Supper in many Protestant churches, often understood as a remembrance or a spiritual meeting with Christ. Eucharist in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches, where most believe Christ is truly present in the bread and wine.

The Sunday gathering

Service in most Protestant churches, Mass in Catholic churches, Divine Liturgy in Orthodox churches.

The person up front

Pastor or minister in many Protestant churches; priest in Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican ones.

How many sacraments

Seven in Catholic and Orthodox teaching; two in most Protestant churches.

Short version: if a word sounds formal, it probably tells you which tradition you are in.
