Dear youth leader,
A good Jonah study for a youth group runs one chapter per week for four weeks, opens with something active, and asks questions teens answer by finding the words in the chapter, not by guessing what the leader wants to hear. That game you just played is the whole idea in twenty seconds.

We make Wayfold, and the printable follows the same approach as the app. These App Store screenshots show Ruth; the free Jonah study has the same steps.

Wayfold itself is an iPhone app. Teens without iPhones can still use the printable; it works with any Bible.
Five pages: a cover with the session plan, then one page per chapter with an opener, five find-it questions, a labeled background note, a talk question and an answer key with verses.

Jonah is about 1,250 words in the World English Bible. Your teens can read the whole book in the time it takes to queue for lunch.
A decision we made: each background note is labeled History, In the text or Interpretation, the same labels Wayfold uses, so teens learn early to tell the passage from what people say about it.
Four, one chapter per meeting. All of Jonah is about 1,250 words in the World English Bible, roughly five minutes of reading in total, so each session has plenty of time for discussion.
It is one of the easiest books to lead with teens: four short chapters, a clear story, a storm, a fish, an angry prophet and an ending that asks the reader a question. It also raises real topics for teens: running from hard things, second chances, and being angry when someone else is forgiven.
No. The PDF is a direct download with no email or account. Print it and copy it for your group.
We wrote the openers and talk questions for middle and high school groups, roughly ages 12 to 18. The find-it questions work for adults too.
Yes. The Ruth and Jonah studies and their printable leader guides are free in Wayfold, along with the complete Bible reader, read-aloud and search. Philippians, James, Habakkuk and Philemon come with Wayfold Premium Lifetime, a one-time purchase with no subscription.
The World English Bible, a public-domain translation and the one inside Wayfold. Teens can follow in any translation; verse numbers match in most English Bibles.
An illustration, not a real group.
Eleven teens, a bag of pretzels, and the 1-to-10 anger vote. Most hands go up at eight or nine. Then the reading: Jonah angry, Jonah under the vine, a worm, a hot wind. Someone laughs at the worm.
“Find where Jonah says why he ran.” It takes a minute. A quiet girl reads 4:2 out loud: “for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful.” Then, without being asked: “Wait, he ran because God is nice?”
The leader does not answer. She reads 4:11, God’s question, and lets it sit. Nobody fills the silence for a good ten seconds, which in a youth room is a very long time.
Wayfold’s Jonah study, its leader guide, the full Bible reader and read-aloud are free. Pair them with the printable.
