How do you study a chapter of the Bible?

Read the whole chapter twice, list the people and places, put the events in order, then answer “what happened?” questions using only verses from the chapter before you look at anyone else's explanation. That is the core of the checklist below. Every step is shown on Ruth 1, so you can see what an answer looks like.

The 9-step chapter study checklist

Tick as you go. Nothing is saved or sent; it just helps you keep your place.

If your answer can't point to a verse, it is an opinion. Label it, and keep it.

A kitchen table, a teenager, Ruth 1

A parent homeschooling a fourteen-year-old wants to “do Bible” properly and buys a thick commentary. Two weeks later neither of them has opened Ruth. So they try the checklist instead: read it twice, list six names, put five events in order on sticky notes.

At step seven the teenager notices “return” keeps coming back and asks why Ruth would “return” to a country she has never been to. That question, from the text, is worth more than a chapter of someone else's notes. Then the commentary comes off the shelf.

How Wayfold walks a chapter in 3 steps

  1. Read. The full chapter in the World English Bible, or have it read aloud.
  2. Check. Answer a few questions about what happened, then see the exact words in the chapter that answer each one.
  3. Trace and find. Put the main events in order, each tied to its verse, then tap the line that answers a prompt.

Notes that go deeper are labeled: In the text, History, Interpretation, Traditions differ, or Debated. That labeling is the design decision we care about most; it is step 8 of the checklist, built into every note.

Bible study questions for beginners

How long should it take to study one chapter of the Bible?

For a short chapter like Ruth 1, 20 to 30 minutes covers all nine steps. Longer chapters can be split over two sittings; steps 1 and 2 still work best in one go.

Do I need a study Bible or commentary to start?

No. Everything on this checklist uses only the chapter itself. Commentaries are useful after you have formed your own questions, because then you are reading them to answer something, not to be told what to think.

Which chapter should a beginner start with?

Pick a chapter that tells a story with a clear beginning and end. Ruth 1, Jonah 1 and Mark 4 work well. Avoid starting with a dense letter or a list of laws.

What is the difference between reading and studying the Bible?

Reading is going through the text; studying is asking it questions and checking your answers against the words on the page. Nehemiah 8:8 describes both: they read “distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading” (World English Bible).

How do I study a Bible chapter with my kids at home?

Use the same nine steps and give each child a job: one lists people, one marks places, one finds the repeated word. The ordering step works well as a race with sticky notes.

Who should pick something else

If you want a read-the-Bible-in-a-year plan, daily devotionals, or deep Greek and Hebrew word study, Wayfold is not built for that; it covers six study books (21 chapters) closely rather than the whole Bible quickly. It is iPhone only, and every quotation is from the World English Bible.
