How do you start reading the Bible again?

Start small and story-first: one short passage a day for seven days, one thing to do from it, and a few minutes of prayer, instead of restarting a whole-Bible plan on page one. The week below totals 1,840 words of Scripture. At the average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute from the Brysbaert reading-rate meta-analysis (2019), that is about 8 minutes of reading across the entire week.

You don't need a fresh start on Genesis 1. You need a Tuesday you actually show up for.

Your first week inside FORGED, annotated

We make FORGED. If you'd rather not plan your own week, this is what the first seven days look like in the app, marked up so you know exactly what you're tapping and what costs money.

  1. FORGED Day 1 screen showing Body, Mind and Spirit tasks under a Begin Today's Forge button 12

Day 1: one button, three pillars

    1. Home shows one next step. 2. Body, Mind and Spirit, each ticked off as you go. Body has Gentle, Standard and Challenging levels, or a mobility option or act of service if you're not up for exercise. Day 1 is free.

  2. FORGED Mind screen with Quick Read, Go Deeper and Original Passage tabs and Joshua 1:9 from the World English Bible 12

    The Mind tab: Scripture first

    1. Switch between Quick Read, Go Deeper and the Original Passage. 2. The verse is quoted word for word from the World English Bible and labeled; the plain-English commentary sits in its own box underneath, with one mission for the day.

  3. FORGED prayer screen asking how long you will sit with Him, with 3, 5 and 10 minute options 1

    Spirit: pick 3, 5 or 10 minutes

    1. The timer dims the screen to a single ember. No button sounds, no scores. For a man who hasn't prayed in years, three minutes of quiet is a real start.

  4. FORGED badges grid including First Stone, Kindled and Week of Iron for a 7-day streak 1

    Day 7: Week of Iron

    1. Keep all three pillars for seven days and you earn the Week of Iron badge and the Belt of Truth. Miss a day and nothing you earned is erased. Prefer no game at all? Hide the Knight, Bastion and rank in Settings.

  5. FORGED Premium screen with yearly, monthly and lifetime options and a Continue Free link 12

The honest part: Day 2 costs money

    1. Days 2 to 90 need FORGED Premium: yearly, monthly or a one-time lifetime purchase (the screenshot shows US prices of $69.99 a year, $10.99 a month or $149.99 lifetime). The annual plan has a 14-day free trial for eligible new subscribers. 2. Or tap Continue Free and keep Bible Basics, the glossary and the daily verse.

A comeback week, start to finish

An illustration, not a testimonial

Picture a man who last opened a Bible at a youth camp. Fifteen years later there's a Bible on the shelf with a receipt still in it as a bookmark, somewhere in Leviticus. He's tried twice in January. Both times he started at Genesis 1 and lost the thread by mid-February.

This time he does Luke 15 on a Monday night. Day 2 is Lamentations 3, read in the truck before work. He skips Thursday, then reads Mark 1 on Friday instead of trying to catch up. By Sunday he's on John 21, the longest passage of the week, and it takes him under three minutes to read and about ten to think about.

Nothing dramatic happened. He just did seven short readings and one small action each. That's the whole plan, and that's why it works for men who've quit before: the week is small enough to finish.

Questions men ask about coming back to the Bible

Where should I start if I haven't read the Bible in years?

Start with short, story-shaped passages instead of Genesis 1 or a whole book. Luke 15 (the prodigal son), Psalm 23, Mark 1 and John 21 are under 600 words each in the World English Bible, which is a few minutes of reading.

How long should I read the Bible each day when I'm starting again?

Five to ten minutes is enough. The seven passages on this page total 1,840 words, about 8 minutes of reading spread over a whole week at an average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute. Add a few minutes to think and pray.

What if I feel guilty about how long I've been away?

Read Luke 15:20 first: the father saw his son "while he was still far off" and ran to him. Guilt is a reason to come back, not a reason to wait until you feel ready.

Should I read the Bible in a year to get back into it?

Not as your first step. A one-year plan asks for about 2,000 words a day and falls apart after a missed week. Build a daily habit with short passages first, then take on a bigger plan if you want one.

Which Bible translation should I use to start again?

Use one you understand without a dictionary. This page quotes the World English Bible, a public-domain modern English translation; FORGED uses it too and labels every verse.

Is FORGED free?

Day 1, Bible Basics (12 beginner sessions), the Bible Words glossary, What Do You Need? protocols, Sermon Notes and a daily verse are free. Days 2 to 90 need FORGED Premium (monthly, annual with a 14-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, or lifetime).

How to restart Bible reading in 3 steps

  1. 01

Pick a time, not a goal

Same slot every day: before your phone, in the truck, after the kids are down. Ten minutes, not a chapter count.

  2. 02

    Read one short passage

Use the seven above or FORGED's daily passage. Read it once quickly, once slowly, and pick one line.

  3. 03

    Do one thing, then pray

Act on the line before noon. Close with three quiet minutes. If you miss a day, resume at today; don't stack readings.

Who should pick something else

If you want to read the whole Bible cover to cover, or you want audio Bibles and group chat, a broad Bible app suits you better. FORGED is deliberately narrow: one man, about ten minutes, one day at a time, World English Bible only, iPhone only. The body challenges are a devotional routine, not a fitness program or medical advice.

One decision we made on purpose: the prayer timer stays silent. Rewards, streak flames and chest openings never make a sound during prayer, because the quiet is the point.
