Is gratitude a fruit of the Spirit?
No: gratitude is not one of the nine fruits in Galatians 5:22-23, but the Bible asks for it right alongside them, and it grows from the same soil. The list Paul gives is short and exact:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control." Galatians 5:22-23 (WEB)
Thankfulness turns up a few letters later. Colossians 3:15 reads: And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.
And 1 Thessalonians 5:18 is even plainer: In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.
(Both World English Bible.)
So gratitude is a command and a habit rather than a named fruit. Our reading: the fruit is what the Spirit grows in a person; thanks is how that person answers when they notice it. Gratitude is not on the list, but it is how you notice the list in other people.
The 9-minute Thanksgiving table, minute by minute
One fruit per minute. Someone reads the prompt, anyone can answer, and the timer is just a guide. The ring at the top of the page tracks the same nine minutes.
- 0:00
Love
Thank someone at the table for a time they made room for you this year.
- 1:00
Joy
Name one ordinary moment from this year that still makes you smile.
- 2:00
Peace
Thank God, out loud or quietly, for one worry that never came true.
- 3:00
Patience
Thank the person who waited for you this year. Be specific about when.
- 4:00
Kindness
Name a kindness nobody saw. Thank the person who did it, if they are here.
- 5:00
Goodness
Thank someone who did the right thing when it cost them something.
- 6:00
Faith
Name one promise someone kept to you. Small ones count.
- 7:00
Gentleness
Thank someone whose soft answer cooled things down this year.
- 8:00
Self-control
Thank someone for a time they held back a sharp word. Then pass the pie.
- 9:00
Grace
Close with a short prayer of thanks that names the people you just thanked. Then eat while it is hot.
A made-up Thanksgiving, minute four
Picture a table of eleven: two grandparents, three teenagers, a toddler under the table and a cousin who drove six hours. Minute four is Patience. Someone reads the prompt: thank the person who waited for you this year. Silence. Then the youngest teenager says, quietly, that her dad waited outside the practice rink every Tuesday in the cold and never once checked his phone.
Nobody planned that. Nobody wrote it on a gratitude card. It came out because the prompt pointed at a fruit instead of at a thing. That is the whole design: thanking a person for a fruit makes gratitude specific, and specific thanks is the kind people remember.
Who this Thanksgiving practice is not for
If your table is tense this year, nine minutes of open sharing can put people on the spot. Do it in pairs instead, or write the answers on slips and read them out without names.
If you want a full Thanksgiving Bible study, use a reading plan. This is one verse list and nine prompts. And if your family is not religious, the prompts still work without the prayer at the end; just know the page and the app are openly Christian.
Gratitude and the fruit of the Spirit: questions
Is thankfulness one of the nine fruits of the Spirit?
No. Galatians 5:22-23 names nine: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control. Thankfulness is not on the list, but it is commanded close by in other letters, such as Colossians 3:15 and 1 Thessalonians 5:18.
Which fruit of the Spirit is closest to gratitude?
Joy is the nearest neighbor. Gratitude looks back at a gift and says thank you; joy is the gladness that can stay even when the gift is small. Many people find one feeds the other.
What does the Bible say about giving thanks?
1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you" (WEB). Colossians 3:15 ends with a short command: "and be thankful."
How do you teach the fruit of the Spirit at Thanksgiving?
Tie each fruit to a thank-you. Instead of listing what you are grateful for, name a person who showed love, patience or kindness this year and thank them. The 9-minute table on this page does exactly that.
Can young children do the 9-minute table?
Yes. Let a child read the fruit name and the adults answer first so the child hears an example. If nine minutes is too long, do three fruits and save the rest for dessert.

Gratitude vs joy vs kindness at the table
Three words people mix up in November. A quick strip to tell them apart.
How to run the 9-minute table in 3 steps
- Pick a reader. A child who can read is perfect. They read the fruit and its prompt from this page or from a printout.
- One minute each. Anyone can answer; nobody has to. If a fruit gets a long answer, let it run and skip a later one.
- Write one line after. On a napkin, or in Ninefruit's private journal, which stays on your phone and is never sent to a server or to AI.
Want the practice to keep going after the leftovers run out? Ninefruit gives you one real situation a day, about two minutes, with no score and no judgement. Missing a day costs nothing; nothing in your orchard wilts. That last part was a deliberate choice on our side: a thank-you habit should never feel like a debt.
